What is Strengthening Family Coping Resources (SFCR)
Strengthening Family Coping Resources (SFCR) is a manualized, trauma-focused, skill-building intervention. SFCR is designed for families living in traumatic contexts with the goal of reducing the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related disorders in children and adult caregivers. SFCR provides accepted, empirically supported trauma treatment within a family format.
Since most families living in traumatic contexts contend with on-going stressors and threats, SFCR is also designed to increase coping resources in children, adult caregivers, and in the family system to prevent relapse and re-exposure. SFCR builds the coping resources necessary to help families boost their sense of safety, function with stability, regulate their emotions and behaviors, and improve communication about and understanding of the traumas they have experienced. SFCR’s therapeutic strategies promote contextual change within the family milieu through encouraging positive modifications in important aspects of daily life and home environment.
SFCR is an evidence-supported intervention. Results of feasibility and implementation studies of SFCR demonstrate significant and positive results.
SFCR 15-Week Trauma Treatment Multi-Family Group
SFCR’s trauma treatment model consists of a 15-week multifamily group presented in 2-hour weekly sessions, available in English or Spanish. The intervention is divided into three Modules.
Module I introduces the families to the concept of family ritual, routine, and storytelling. Module II focuses on using constructive family coping resources when families are dealing with stress. Module III focuses on helping families deal with specific traumatic events, reconnect, move beyond the trauma, and protect family members from further exposure. View Sample Session Guideline.
Handouts are frequently used to support the concepts being presented and to encourage thoughtful family discussion. View Sample Handout.
Families are often asked to practice new skills at home or to do an activity to prepare for the next group. View Sample Homework.
SFCR High-Risk 10-Week Multi-Family Group
SFCR’s High-Risk (HR) model consists of a 10-week multifamily group presented in 2-hour weekly sessions, available in English and Spanish. The intervention includes the first two Modules and concludes with the 10-Week High Risk Session.
The High-Risk model is appropriate for families at risk for exposure to trauma or for families who have experienced trauma but have minimal symptoms of traumatic stress. This is also a closed enrollment model.
SFCR Peer-to-Peer
SFCR-P2P is a manualized, peer-led group intervention focused on improving intergenerational relationships and especially on trans-generational trauma, violence, substance abuse and mental illness. The main goal of the groups is to help parents identify and build on the skills they need for sustained recovery in the contexts of their current family and the next generation of youth and young adults.
SFCR-P2P groups are conducted using a workshop model with open enrollment, in which parents can drop in for any number of sessions. Each session runs for one hour facilitated by two peer mentors. One mentor takes the role of leader while the other mentor assists. The co-facilitator is also available to aid any participants struggling with the activity or discussion. Clinical backup or liaison to help provide support or one-to-one assistance if a group participant becomes distressed is strongly recommended.
Individual Family
Family Trauma Therapy (SFCR-FTT) is manualized family therapy delivered in weekly 1-hour sessions. It is a phased approach. SFCR-FTT is a family trauma treatment created by combining the core principles of SFCR with the beginning framework of CFTSI. SFCR-FTT is designed for families living in traumatic contexts with the goal of reducing the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related disorders in children and adult caregivers. It is delivered to families raising children of all ages (with an identified child aged 4-18).
